CA 72-4 — What Your Blood Test Result Means

ScanHealth Learn Tumor Markers CA 72-4

The Gastric Cancer Marker

CA 72-4 is a mucin-like glycoprotein that's most closely associated with gastric (stomach) cancer, though it's also elevated in ovarian, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. It complements CEA and CA 19-9 for GI cancer monitoring. Like most tumor markers, it's better for monitoring than screening.

What is CA 72-4?

CA 72-4 is a mucin-like tumor-associated glycoprotein (TAG-72). Normal: <6 U/mL. Best specificity among GI tumor markers (fewer benign elevations than CEA or CA 19-9). Used in combination with CEA for gastric cancer monitoring.

What High CA 72-4 Means

Concerning for gastric cancer (sensitivity ~40-50%), ovarian mucinous tumors, or other GI malignancies. Benign causes are relatively few compared to other tumor markers, making it somewhat more specific.

Common symptoms:

Often asymptomatic early · Gastric cancer: weight loss, early satiety, nausea, abdominal pain, anemia · CA 72-4 itself causes no symptoms

What Low CA 72-4 Means

Reassuring.

Common symptoms:

No symptoms

Why It Matters

When normal:

Most specific GI tumor marker (fewer false positives)

Monitors gastric cancer treatment and recurrence

Complements CEA for GI cancer monitoring

Useful for mucinous ovarian cancer

Risks if abnormal:

Limited sensitivity (~40-50% for gastric cancer)

Not useful as standalone screening

Can be elevated in pancreatitis and liver cirrhosis

What Can Cause Abnormal Levels?

Gastric Cancer

35% likely

Best tumor marker for gastric cancer, though sensitivity is moderate.

Ovarian Mucinous Tumors

25% likely

More specific for mucinous ovarian cancer than CA-125.

Other GI Cancers

Colorectal, pancreatic, esophageal.

Pancreatitis

Mild elevation possible.

Liver Cirrhosis

Mild elevation possible.

What You Can Do

CA 72-4 is a monitoring tool, not for screening

Impact: Best used in combination with CEA for GI cancers \u00B7 Timeline: N/A

If lifestyle changes aren't enough:

If elevated: upper GI endoscopy to evaluate for gastric cancer

Impact: Direct visualization and biopsy \u00B7 Timeline: As indicated

Recommended retest: Per oncology protocol for cancer monitoring
