Iodine is the essential ingredient your thyroid needs to make hormones. T4 has 4 iodine atoms, T3 has 3—that's literally what the numbers mean. Without iodine, your thyroid can't produce hormones no matter how hard it tries, leading to goiter (thyroid enlargement) as the gland swells trying to compensate.
What is Iodine?
Iodine is a trace element essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. Measured via urinary iodine concentration (spot or 24-hour). The thyroid gland concentrates iodine to 20-40x blood levels. Iodized salt programs have largely eliminated severe deficiency in developed countries, but mild deficiency is resurging.

Excess iodine can paradoxically cause BOTH hypothyroidism (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) and hyperthyroidism (Jod-Basedow). Too much iodine is particularly risky in people with existing thyroid autoimmunity.

Your thyroid can't make enough hormones. The thyroid enlarges (goiter) trying to capture every available iodine molecule. In pregnancy, iodine deficiency causes intellectual disability in the child (cretinism). Iodine deficiency is the most common preventable cause of intellectual disability worldwide.
